Good wine really doesn't have to break the bank.
There's a persistent myth that you only drink "real" wine once you spend over twenty euros. As if you first have to be financially uncomfortable before something is allowed to taste good. Fortunately, we now know better.
At Wijnhuis Cave, we love bottles that surprise. Wines where someone takes a sip and says: "Wait... does this really only cost €12?"
Those are the moments that make us happy.
So we dove into our 'wine cellar' for a mission that ended dangerously fun: collecting the best affordable wines under €15. From crisp patio wines to robust red companions for a cozy night on the couch with a pizza that was actually meant for two.
And yes... there's a winner among them too.
1. Verdejo - Olcaviana
A wine that immediately makes you feel like you're on vacation, even if you're just sitting on the couch in Delft with rain hitting the window.
Olcaviana is smooth, accessible, and precisely the kind of bottle you open "for one glass" and then suddenly realize it's empty. Fruity, friendly, and completely uncomplicated. Not a wine that makes a fuss about decanting or aeration. Just open, pour, and enjoy.
Perfect for:
- Friday night drinks
- tapas
- people who say "I don't really like wine" and then still reach for a second glass
2. False Bay Chenin Blanc – Waterkloof
This Chenin Blanc from South Africa is one of those wines that wine lovers get excited about, while others mainly think: "Nice and fresh, another glass please."
And honestly? Both reactions are justified. The wine has fresh citrus, a slight tropical touch, and just enough tension to remain interesting. Not heavy, not sweet, not difficult. Just incredibly well made.
Bonus points for the name "Slow." That refers to the calm, natural way the wine is made. Which is actually exactly how you should drink it.
Slowly. Outdoors. With sunshine. Maybe some bitterballen.
3. Carignan - Abbots & Delaunay
This is one of those French red wines that you immediately understand. Warm, soft, and cozy.
The Languedoc region is known for wines that deliver a lot of flavor without any elitist fuss. And you can taste that here. Ripe dark fruit, a slight spicy edge, and enough body to stand perfectly alongside a burger, pasta, or cheese board.
This is not a wine that screams for attention. This is the friend who is always fun at parties.
4. Sauvignon Blanc – Abbots & Delaunay
Every friend group has someone who always says, "Just give me a Sauvignon Blanc."
And honestly: we get it.
This Sauvignon Blanc is fresh, crisp, and lively. Think citrus, green apple, and that typical refreshing character that makes Sauvignon Blanc so beloved.
Ideal for:
- sushi
- sunny afternoons
- spontaneous drinks
- pretending you know about wine by saying "nicely mineral"
It's dangerously easy to drink. That's a compliment.
5. Viognier – Abbots & Delaunay ⭐ Our winner
Okay. We had to discuss this one.
Because Viognier sometimes has the reputation of being either fantastic or feeling like you're drinking a scented candle. Fortunately, this one clearly falls into category one.
This Viognier is full-bodied, soft, and aromatic without being overly heavy. You taste ripe fruit, a bit of peach, some floral notes, and a creamy softness that feels incredibly luxurious for this price.
This is really one of those wines where you automatically check the label again because you expect it to say at least €25.
Why is this our winner?
Because it has it all:
- accessible
- special
- affordable
- impressive without being complicated
The perfect "I'll bring a nice bottle" wine.
6. Domaine Robert Vic – Greg & Juju Rosé
For years, rosé unfairly had the image of "summery patio lemonade." But a good rosé can be seriously delicious.
This one proves that perfectly.
Fresh, dry, and elegant with red fruit and enough freshness to become dangerously drinkable. This is not cloyingly sweet poolside rosé. This is grown-up rosé that still stays fun.
We like to call this:
a rosé for people who say they don't drink rosé.
7. Mourvèdre - Abbots & Delaunay
Mourvèdre might sound like a grape only discussed by people with a wine podcast and a linen shirt, but it's actually just an incredibly tasty grape.
This wine is spicy, bold, and a bit fuller-bodied. Think dark fruit, spices, and a bit of character. Truly a wine for autumn evenings, long dinners, or simply when you're in the mood for something more robust.
Great with:
- grilled meat
- stews
- an evening where you finally catch up on that series you've been putting off for three months
8. Cava - Leonor de Carrera
Sparkling wine under €15 can be exciting. And by that, we don't always mean in a good way.
But this Cava Brut is surprisingly fresh and stylish. Fine bubbles, fresh notes, and just enough elegance to make an ordinary Tuesday instantly festive.
Because honestly: not every sparkling wine needs champagne prices to be enjoyable.
Perfect for:
- birthdays
- brunch
- "we have something to celebrate"
- "we don't really have anything to celebrate but are opening bubbles anyway"
A perfectly legitimate reason too, by the way.
9. Nebbiolo – Serre dei Roveri
Nebbiolo is the grape behind big Italian names like Barolo and Barbaresco. But those bottles can make your bank account cry.
This Nebbiolo, fortunately, shows that it can also be affordable.
Elegant, lightly spicy, and with that typical Italian character that makes you spontaneously want to cook pasta. A bit more structure, perhaps a bit more serious, but still accessible enough for a relaxed evening.
This is a wine for people who slowly want to delve further into the world of wine without immediately having to learn complicated wine terms.
10. Spätburgunder - Deutzerhof Legere
Germany makes so much more than just sweet white wine. Seriously.
This Deutzerhof Legere is a great example of that. Fresh, refined, and incredibly drinkable. A wine with elegance without stiffness.
Some wines try to impress. This wine doesn't even need to.
It just quietly does its thing. And honestly? That works surprisingly well.
Affordable wine is more fun than expensive wine stress
Of course, a special €60 bottle can be fantastic. But honestly? Most beautiful wine moments don't come from the price tag.
They arise:
- on a patio
- during a dinner with friends
- on the couch with a good movie
- during "just one more glass then"
And that's precisely why we love affordable wines that are truly good.
No difficult wine snob stories. Just delicious bottles that make you happy.
Curious about one of these wines? You can find them all in our collection!
