King's Day in Delft is one of those days where the city feels just a little different. As if everyone simultaneously decides: today we're going to be a bit more relaxed, cheerful, and above all, more sociable. The canals turn orange, music echoes on every corner, and somewhere around noon, you wonder how it is that you've already run into three acquaintances without having made any plans.
But what are you actually going to do on King's Day in Delft? Don't worry, we (Vera & Casper from Wijnhuis Cave) will guide you through a day that's just right.
Start your day the right way: with something orange (and sweet)
Let's be honest: King's Day without a tompouce is like wine without a glass. It's technically possible, but why would you?
The absolute must-have in Delft is the orange tompouce from Stadsbakkerij De Diamanten Ring.
Those things are dangerously good. Crispy layers, creamy filling, and just enough sweetness to kick off your day festively. Our tip: get two right away. One for now, one for ten minutes from now when you regret only buying one.
And yes, here comes our first wine tip (we couldn't resist): a fresh, slightly sparkling wine goes surprisingly well with a tompouce. Think of something that's not too heavy, nicely fruity, and above all: festive.
Stroll through the flea market (and find unexpected treasures)
After your sugar rush, it's time to dive into the city. The flea market in Delft is everywhere. From the city center to the canals — you'll stumble upon it naturally.
What will you find there? Everything. From old vinyl records and vintage jackets to children's toys and that one bizarre object you didn't know you needed. That's precisely the charm.
Our tip: Go without a plan. Seriously. The best finds happen when you're not actively searching. And if halfway through you think, "I'm thirsty" — that's your sign.
Wine moment in the park (or just along the canal)
King's Day isn't just about the crowds. It's those moments in between that make the day.
A blanket, some sunshine (we're hoping for it), a few friends, and a good bottle of wine – that's all you really need.
At Wijnhuis Cave, we believe wine doesn't have to be complicated. Especially not on a day like this.
Consider:
- A crisp white wine that's easy to drink
- A rosé as sunny as the atmosphere
- Or a light red wine if you want a bit more body
No fuss, no complicated terms, just something delicious that suits the moment.
We always say: the best wine on King's Day is the wine you don't have to overthink.
Music, crowds, and spontaneous plans
By midday, Delft slowly transforms into one big festival. Bands, DJs, and street artists pop up everywhere.
Maybe you'll linger in a square, maybe you'll end up on a boat, maybe you'll suddenly find yourself dancing with people you didn't know five minutes ago. That's King's Day. Let it happen.
Eating, drinking, and most importantly: lingering
Around dinner time, something special happens. Nobody really wants to go home. So what do you do? You stay.
You grab something else to eat, open another bottle, and before you know it, it's evening.
This is also the moment when wine truly takes on its role. Not as a "drink", but as part of the atmosphere. Something you share. Something that extends the moment just a little longer.
And that's exactly what we do it for.
Ending it the way you started it
Maybe you'll end the day where you started. Maybe somewhere totally different.
But if all goes well, you have:
- Laughed too much
- Bought something you didn't need
- And at least once thought: "this is exactly why King's Day is so much fun"
Finally (from our little wine cellar perspective)
We see King's Day a bit like an open wine cellar. And that's why we will be open on King's Day between 11:00 and 15:00.
So whether you start with a tompouce, end with a last glass of wine, or get lost in the city somewhere in between. Feel free to pay us a visit in the Choorstraat.
Cheers,
Vera & Casper 🍷
