When you say you run a wine shop, people often think one thing.
"You must drink wine every day, then."
And usually after that: "Then you probably don't care for non-alcoholic options."
Well. Time to properly put that notion in the wine cellar (a.k.a. cave).
At Wijnhuis Cave, we don't believe in all or nothing. We believe in balance. In choosing what fits the moment. And sometimes, a good non-alcoholic alternative is just right. Without guilt. Without explanation. Simply because you feel like it.
Why we take non-alcoholic seriously
Let's be honest right away. Non-alcoholic drinking is no longer just a trend. It's a movement. In the Netherlands, more than twenty percent of adults now participate in Dry January. And even outside of January, more and more people are consciously choosing less alcohol, without wanting to enjoy themselves less.
And yes, we recognize that.
Casper and Vera are currently training for a marathon. That means getting up early, covering many miles, and being a little more conscious about what you drink. Less alcohol, then, but certainly no less fun.
It's precisely during such a period that you realize how nice it is when there are alternatives that don't feel like a concession.
Not all non-alcoholic options are the same
Many people immediately think of de-alcoholized wine when they hear "non-alcoholic." And that's precisely what often doesn't excite us. Not because it's bad, but because it often just isn't quite right.
Something that was once wine and then lost its alcohol misses tension and flavor because you lose these during the process. For people who don't like alcohol at all, it often feels strange or even unpleasant.
That's why we prefer to look at drinks that never contained alcohol. Alternatives that tell their own story.
What does make us happy
Tea is one such example we increasingly turn to. Good tea has structure, bitterness, length, and sometimes even that slightly drying sensation you look for in wine. The same effect can be created by adding various fruit types to juice and playing with different ripeness of the fruit, which brings acids, bitters, and sugars. Herbs bring complexity and layering. Fruit can be fresh and pure without becoming sweet.
The beauty is that these drinks don't pretend to be wine. They stand on their own. And precisely because of that, they fit surprisingly well at the table.
Non-alcoholic doesn't have to be childish. It can be exciting. Grown-up. Seriously delicious.
Balance is not a boring word
For us, it's not about selling less wine. It's about drinking better. Sometimes a bottle you really sit down for. Sometimes something non-alcoholic because it better suits your day, your body, or your plans for tomorrow.
And sometimes just because you feel like something different.
Non-alcoholic isn't a replacement. It's a valuable alternative. And if you choose wisely, you don't miss anything at all.
Are you curious about what we ourselves like to drink on non-alcoholic days? We currently have 3 favorites added to our range:
Small bottles of sparkling fruit juice that isn't overly sweet: Jörg Geiger 'Cuvée no. 11' has the taste of green apple, blossom, lime zest, and herbs.
From the same (wine)maker: Jörg Geiger '32°', this one has a slightly sweeter association than the Cuvée no. 11; you taste green apple, peach, quince, and fennel.
As a third alternative Vincero Rosé Alcohol-free, here the alcohol has been removed via vacuum distillation, which preserves most of the freshness and fruit flavors: strawberry, raspberry, grapefruit, and rose petals.
Welcome to the Cave (wine cellar). Even without alcohol, it's cozy here. 🍷✨
