Waarom goed glaswerk je wijn écht beter maakt

Why good glassware truly makes your wine better

At Wijnhuis Cave, we believe that wine is more than what's in the bottle. It's about the whole picture: the moment, the company… and yes, also the glass you drink from.

We totally get it: you have a nice bottle at home and you just pour it into whatever is in the cupboard. But honestly, good glassware really makes a difference. More than you might think.

Wine from plastic? Preferably not…
Let's be clear about that right away 😉
Drinking wine from a plastic cup simply doesn't do your wine justice. Scents linger, flavors flatten, and the whole moment feels a little less special. And that's a shame, especially if you've just picked out a nice bottle.

The glass determines what you smell and taste
A good wine glass is shaped so that the aromas of the wine come together beautifully. Your nose plays a much bigger role than you think. The better you smell the wine, the more you taste it.

That's why you often see that wine glasses are a little rounder and narrow slightly towards the top. This keeps the aromas trapped in the glass exactly where you want them.

You can also easily experience the effect of a glass yourself. For example, take a straight flute, a smaller wine glass, and a somewhat rounder glass. Fill them with water and take a sip from each glass. You'll notice that the water from a flute flows quite directly into your mouth, while a rounder glass distributes the water more over your tongue. And precisely that difference also influences how you taste wine.

And that champagne flute?
Those slender, straight glasses look festive, but are actually not ideal. Especially not for better sparkling wines.

In a narrow flute, the aromas hardly have any room to develop. You see the bubbles rise beautifully, but you miss a large part of the aroma and therefore also the taste experience.

A slightly wider glass (for example, a tulip shape) allows the wine to really come into its own – more aroma, more taste, more pleasure.

Practical can also just be good
Fortunately, good glassware doesn't have to be complicated. What we consider important:

  • Nice to drink from

  • Beautiful, but not overly fragile

  • Can go in the dishwasher

Our new glasses are exactly that. Available in sets of 2, strong enough for daily use, and designed to enhance your wine.

The small upgrade that makes a big difference
You really don't need a cupboard full of different glasses. But one good all-round wine glass at home? That might be the easiest way to make every bottle taste just a little better.

And that makes us very happy.

Curious and want to experience it yourself?
You are always welcome at Wijnhuis Cave. We would be happy to show you the difference, and of course, you can taste it for yourself 😉

Cheers,
Casper & Vera
